According to Ford, in the mid-1960s at least two Mustang station wagon designs were given serious consideration and moved to advanced stages. One made it all the way to running prototype, having been built upon a 1966 coupe.

Ford noted that the designs were all three-door configurations and said they were more comparable to European “shooting brakes” than traditional American station wagons. In any event, usable space seems to have benefited considerably, though at the cost of an uninspired and plebeian-looking rear half.
