My first car was a 1970 Nova. After crashing it on my way to school, less than a year later, I got a used 1982 Camaro Z28. These are some old pictures of it.

My second car, a 1982 Camaro Z28. This would have been either late 1988 or early 1989. That’s me, properly seat-belted for a drive.

Though within the first few months of ownership I’d discovered woeful things about how the car had been treated, it turned out to be quite reliable.

My high school pal, Mike, had bought a 1984 Z28 (pictured in white) a few months before I’d gotten mine. However, his had t-tops and the H.O. (High Output) engine, with a 5-speed manual… a bunch of equipment mine lacked.

Whereas the 1984 H.O. 5.0-liter V8 put out 190 hp, my 1982’s V8 put out a wheezy 145 hp and was connected to a 3-speed automatic transmission. (Mine had a carburetor, not cross-fire injection.)

While the 1982 Z28 is certainly a far cry from being the fastest to bear the name, it was a blast to drive and I was in love with the design. (In the background are my parents’ 1984 Nissan pickup and 1983 Chevy Celebrity sedan.)
