Thirty years ago, who could have imagined the automotive buying powerhouse China was to become. Probably no one and there’s a reason for that.

Opening the flood gates
It wasn’t until 1985 that China’s private citizens were finally, legally allowed to purchase a car for personal use.

Until then, the only people of China that were permitted a personal vehicle were senior party members and top government officials.

In November of 1985, it was reported that a selection of imported and Chinese-sourced cars would be made available through six, yes that’s six, sales centers across the country.

In 2009, China toppled the United States as the largest auto market in the world.
